system volume information corrupt unreadable

Received the message 'V:\System Volume Information is corrupt and unreadable' and then something about run chkdsk. This error occurred within XP on my dual boot system (XP/Vista). XP became pretty much non-responsive because of the multitude of 'System Volume Information is corrupt and unreadable' error messages. They appeared througout my session... Now, I finally managed to make my way to the restart (several dozen clicks later) and rebooted into Vista. No problems booting into Vista but my Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem which had worked in previous Vista sessions was now being reported as having no driver. I ran 'error checking' and the system could find no troubles... Went into XP recovery console and ran chkdsk on v: and no problems reported so.... what happened? is this something users should know about if trying a dualboot configuration?
Oh, I also noted that the Boot folder containing the Vista bootsect.exe file was long gone...
Hard disk seems fine and I closed both XP and Vista via the shutdown menu... I'm afraid of losing the XP data so uninstalled Vista by resorting to the fixmbr and fixboot in recovery console (XP)...

It might be. Be sure to report it as a Vista bug even though it impacted XP. Volume Shadowcopy Service in XP and Vista have some incompatibilites, the most notable of which is the deletion of Vista System Restore points following a restart of XP.
